IRON MAN OF INDIA: SARDAR PATEL [B.11]

Hello Everyone,

The Journey of India towards independence has been very significant. The freedom that we enjoy today came at the cost of many lives. But don't you think India has many unsung heroes? There are many extraordinary personalities who haven't received credit for the prominent roles they played in our independence. Isn't it important to acknowledge them in the way they actually deserve? So I am introducing a series where I will talk about such heroes who haven't received much light.

There were a countless number of hands involved directly or indirectly in the struggle of freedom but soon after we got independence we had to face a lot of problems because India was nothing like it is today. We had many princely states, there was no structured division of states. Every king was demanding that his kingdom should be a separate nation. We were already divided into 3 halves and India could not afford to have more partitions. At that time we needed someone who could step up and prevent this crisis to happen. There was only one person who was capable enough to perform this task. He was a true patriot, nationalist and the architect of our nation "SARDAR VALLABH BHAI PATEL".  But why he is so important for us? What all he did to build this nation as it is now?

LET'S GET STARTED,

As told earlier India was divided by many small princely states, after independence the biggest task for India was to merge every kingdom and form one country. Many were against the policy of merging their kingdom and to form a republic. Then Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel took charge of the Indian state department (princely state) and Vp Menon became his secretary on 5th July 1947. They dealt with matters arising between the Central Government and the Indian Princely States. All the princely states except Hyderabad, Junagadh, Bhopal, Kashmir and few more refused to sign the letter of accession. Apart from these states, all the rulers were promised honorable positions and were assured of their right and privileges. Of these states situated within the boundaries of the dominion of India, about 565 states  accepted the policy of Sardar Patel. It was because of him that 565 states agreed to merge their kingdoms and form The Republic of India just within a few days. The Role of Sardar Patel in nation-building is immense. He had no personal aspirations or political agenda, he was a true nationalist and all he wanted was India should now be an independent state without any further division.

3 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HIS PERSONALITY:

1. The iron man of India:  The Role he played in Uniting our country was something unimaginable, Convincing 565 states to merge in India was such a superhuman task, and he did it overnight, within few years he managed to merge Bhopal, Junagadh, Hyderabad, and Kashmir as Indian territory. He had such an inspirational aura.

2. Reducing gender impartiality in the elections: Sardar Patel happened to be the first to raise voice against the gender disqualification in the district municipal Act. This Act was something that barred women from contesting elections as per Section 15(1)(c). A resolution was passed in this regard in the Ahmedabad municipality general board on Feb 13, 1913. Sardar Patel had argued that keeping women out of elections was something equivalent to eliminating the representation of half of the urban population. In 1926,Section 15(1)(c) was abolished.

3. No personal aspiration: The sacrifices made by him have a remarkable impact on the growth of our country. His son was instructed by him not to use his name for any political favor and he strictly advised him not to enter into politics until he is in power.

Despite his gigantic contributions, his name still remains in the corner of our history books. He bore a lot of discrimination on both the national and political levels. I hope  the link provided below will help you to get a good idea about his monumental personality and the purpose of my blog to bring such heroes into light gets fulfilled.
