What is secularism?

"The idea of separation of power of states from the religious institutions" or "The belief that religion should not be taking part in the ordinary social and political activity of a country". - SECULARISM

There are so many definitions of secularism and none of them are incorrect. It's not the word that is creating controversies but the application and the usage of the idea are making it debatable.
Through this blog, let us understand why this term has become a heated and controversial issue of the modern time.

Key Focuses-

  • PART 1: What secularism means? and what is secularism in India?
  • PART 2:  Modern secularism of India. Is India ready to be secular?
  • PART 3:  Amendment of secularism. Good or bad?

Let me introduce you to a very interesting fact - the word "secularism" was not linked with religion until 1851. It was a freestanding Latin term that was used in the Christian church

The term "secularism" was first used by the British author George Holyoake to promote his idea of social order. So this was a little overview of the terms "secular" and "secularism".

How was it introduced in India?

India was in a state of emergency when this amendment was done in the year 1976 stating that the preamble of the constitution asserted  India as a secular country. Many of you will think that it was a very good job done by our ex-prime minister, but before jumping to a conclusion just read this paragraph again "INTRODUCED IN A STATE OF EMERGENCY".

What was the state of emergency ,1975? It was a period of time in our country where all the opposition were arrested under the MISA Act.
  • All the media houses were censored
  • All the courts were silent, and even the right to life and liberty was suspended. Even in such a condemning situation, Mrs Indira Gandhi did a suspicious act like this without the consultation of her own cabinet ministers.
On a concluding note, I want to say that the amendment of making India a secular country is not controversial but the way and timing of carrying the process remains suspicious, which clearly hints towards fulfilling a political interest or a personal agenda.
