OTT PLATFORM'S REGULATION IN INDIA [PART-2] [B.34]
Hi readers,
In the previous blog, we discussed the impact of various OTT platforms in the present times. It is known to us that these platforms are not regulated by the government of India and there have been many protests against the content presented on them. There have been many incidents where many Bollywood celebrities have also demanded the regulation of government on these platforms but there is a section of society whose beliefs are contradictory to this. According to them, if the government exercises its control on these OTT platforms, then this will result in choking the right to expression and freedom of speech of the content creators. In this blog, we will study both the angles of this situation and try to derive a conclusion after a detailed analysis.
Let's get started...
There are mainly 5 types of media globally:-
1. Print
Media
2. News
3. Films
4. Advertising
films
5. OTT
Platforms
Except
for the OTT platforms, every other form of media is under the regulation of their
respective boards, so we have to understand that there is some sensitive
content which these mainstream media can never show due to the regulation of
government and in this category OTT platforms have done a great job. There are
issues which every one of us should know about our nation, I will state some web
series as an example, which have raised some prominent issues of our country -
- Family Man: Which Showcases
the issue of sleeper cells, terrorists, conflict between students and the
administration and much more.
- Scam 1992: The Harshad
Mehta's story revolves around one of the biggest scams of
India.
- Delhi Crime: Projecting the heinous incident of the Nirbhaya rape case.
- Jamtara: Featuring telephonic scams going on in our country.
There are many more series like these that reveal issues that our mainstream media would have never brought to us.
There are many directors and producers who use these platforms as a means of constructive criticism of the government, community, or any individual, which according to my perspective is justifiable because there are issues that are yet to be brought up.
So, if these platforms come under complete government control then there will be issues that will remain unknown to us and this will hamper the right of free speech and expression because censorship, at times, is politically motivated, if the content is not suitable according to a political party's agenda then they can modify it accordingly.
Do
you want the power to decide what a
citizen should watch be vested in the hands of the government? I will provide
you various examples of how the previous governments did not let the content
move freely which did not suit their political ideologies or which was
categorized as politically incorrect for them.
1. Chanakya by Chandra Prakash Dwivedi: Let us hear from the producer and the actor himself.
These two are not the only examples of such instances but only a drop from the ocean. I have chosen these two because these movies portrayed two idols of India which according to me, does not seem to be politically incorrect and should have been promoted by the previous government from the initial stages itself.
This calls for a platform where there is a freedom to present such content which otherwise was never brought in front of the people due to the government's political agendas. But as I said I will bring both the aspects of this topic, the next blog will show the other side of the coin too.
I request you not to derive a conclusion and wait for the other half of the blog. If you like the content and the research, then do not forget to provide me with some motivation through comments and reactions. Stay in touch for the upcoming blog.
