Rafale Deal of India : All you need to know about it
RAFALE - A MASTER DEAL OR A SCAM?
Indian national congress claims the Rafale deal of India to be one of the biggest scams ever happened in the country. Are these claims true or just allegations to fulfill an agenda?
Key focuses -
1.Need for aircrafts
2. Why Rafale for India? ( french made)
Why India needs Aircarafts??
- According to IAF Chief Arup Raha, our country requires 200-250 medium fighter aircraft to be prepared for two major fronts. Now, what are these fronts? They are no one but our dear neighbours - China and Pakistan.
- This is not the first time a chief has suggested this. Since 2000, this has been in the air because presently the Russian aircraft that India has, is on the verge of retirement. By 2024, the majority will be under the category of "retired".
- Many Russian-based MIG-21, infamously known as the flying coffin (due to engine failures), which are available with us now have been damaged at the time of the Kargil war.
- This led to a large amount of fund consumption as the jet costs for crores and the precious lives of our pilots too. The government had to bear a lot of loss and it proved to be an expensive affair.
Then, how was the need fulfilled??
Russian-based aircrafts lost the trust of the Indian government due to the poor performance of MIG-21 in the Kargil war. But upcoming events in 2004 i.e. the downfall of Vajpayee Ji's government and the Congress-led UPA in power, delayed any action on the issue.
Now let's make it easy as a story...
The then defence minister, AK Antony, brought a mega tender in 2007 from India to combat the need for aircraft.- Tenders for 126 Medium multirole Combat aircraft (MMRCA).
Many companies participated in it and two of them were left in the competition- French company Dassault and Eurofighter typhoon.
It took much of the time until 2012 to declare the winner with all the testing and performance formalities.
India carried forward the rafale deal.
But a twist took place in the story: Both France and India were going to face elections. (National Election)
Role of opposition-
The UPA govt worked at the pace of a tortoise, hence no deal was finalised in 5 years (2007-2012). They could only indulge in negotiations but nothing fruitful. (As no deal ever happened between them and Dassault).
The one with Dassault group was concluded as India will buy 126 aircraft, out of which 18 will be readily imported "in fly-away condition" and the remaining 108 will be made in India. However, no pricing decisions were made and Dassault never agreed with the offered price.
Soon, elections happen in India and Narendra Modi came to power, which transfers the responsibility of all such issues into the hands of his government.
And the story ends here. But this was all about why it was essential to choose Rafale for India.
