REGULATIONS FOR OTT PLATFORMS : GOOD OR BAD?[PART 3] [B.35]

It is familiar to us that every coin has two sides and thus in this blog let us look at the other aspect of our topic - subscription-based OTT platforms. If you are new to the blog, I request you to read my previous blogs for a quick recap. Before I move ahead, let me remind you of the highlight of the last blog which was about the need for digital OTT platforms and why it is important that there is only partial control of the government over them.

RECAP …

Let's get started...

We have to understand the difference between constructive criticism and intentional criticism motivated by an agenda. If the producers claim that they are doing constructive criticism through these streaming services to bring a change in society then they should not be targeting one community or faith in particular, because many people have analyzed that the content of OTT platforms in India is targeting the faith which is possessed by the majority.

If they really want to bring a positive change out of their web series using criticism as a means then they should accept that there are imperfections in every faith, community, and culture and not one particular community.

To be very clear, these major OTT content providers have not projected India as a land of cultural diversity, haven't shown its religious culture, its ancient history, and not even displayed the heroes of India. This can be interpreted as their lack of knowledge about India or an intentional act to ignore the positive sides.

I am pretty sure that if video streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video can criticize the Indian government constructively then why can't they project the pragmatic side of India? Is India merely a country of scams, poverty, and Terrorism ridden country? And most importantly, is it so that all the faults are present solely in Hinduism and not any other religion?

Before moving ahead, here is a video of a famous director Vivek Agnihotri which shows what happens if a director wants to show some content through streaming media that exposes the radical Islamic terrorism which resulted in the genocide of Hindus.

Now a question arises here: why is the content shown on these Indian OTT platforms biased and one-sided truth is being presented? Why Hindu genocide and Islamic terrorism do not fall under the category of social issues which can be considered as a subject for constructive criticism? If it is true that these digital media platforms do not have government regulation on them, then why are they backing off from showing video content on issues like Hindu genocide and Islamic terrorism? Who are they afraid of?

If the content creators want to serve some content for constructive criticism then what is the cause behind the exclusion of these topics that lie under the category of major social issues? This is why I mentioned in the previous blog not to derive any conclusion because this is the other half of the subject matter.

Let's get to the reason behind this. The only possible pressure that these top OTT platforms may face is only from their investors because there is no regulatory pressure from the government side on these media services. As mentioned previously, India does not have any role in investing in these online video platforms. The funds are provided by western, middle eastern, and Chinese investors who do not hold any interest in the growth and welfare of India.

I have served both the aspects of this issue, one which shows the requirement of OTT services and why there should not be absolute control of government on them, and the other that shows how these OTT videos have a biased approach in projecting the content. It is important to understand that is this freedom of speech used as a weapon against us?

If you feel that I have done an unbiased research then please like, subscribe, and do share it with your friends who follow the OTT content because it is far better to understand the purpose behind a trend rather than going along with it. I hope you stay in good health and stay in touch for the upcoming blogs.
